Westminster Presbyterian church began in 1939 with services held at St. Agnes School led by Rev Frederick Haverkamp. By 1940 the congregation had outgrown that facility and began meeting at Rev Haverkamp’s nearby residence.
The first building on the corner of Cameron Mills Road opened in 1942. Rev Haverkamp departed in 1943 and was replaced by Dr. Cliff Johnson, who would lead Westminster through an incredible period of growth over the following 27 years.
In 1952 the current sanctuary was constructed to accommodate the growing congregation. On November 23, 1952, the cornerstone for that building was laid by then President Harry S. Truman – a singular honor for Westminster. A large education building opened in 1961 to provide adequate space for Sunday school classes and music facilities as well as additional office and meeting areas
Always striving for musical excellence, Westminster installed a new Moeller organ in 1965 and hosted a dedicatory recital performed by virtuoso Virgil Fox, of the Riverside Church in New York City. That organ was recently refurbished and continues to provide glorious music for a variety of services.
The Westminster Preschool was established in 1975 to serve families in our congregation and in the community at large by providing outstanding educational opportunities for young children. It continues to thrive in newly renovated classrooms. In 1992-93 and 2006-07, the church underwent renovations to ensure that the facility remains safe, efficient, attractive, and handicapped accessible. The most recent renovation, which took 9 months, included upgrades to the sanctuary to provide enhanced sightlines, better sound and a more beautiful space for worship. Other major projects were the installation of a new heating and cooling system, revamping Sunday school classrooms, moving the library and the nursery, etc.
Since the untimely passing of Dr. Johnson in 1970, Westminster has been led by other outstanding pastors including Dr. George Pera (1980-1995), Dr. Stuart Broberg (1997-2003) and our current Head of Staff, Dr. Larry Hayward. All have led a church that provides outstanding opportunities for spiritual growth through worship, mission projects, educational offerings for children and adults, a strong music program, and a wide variety of fellowship groups.
Although there have been many changes since Westminster was founded, the current congregation remains as enthusiastic and energetic as their predecessors, with a deep commitment to helping their fellow members, the community and the wider world.
