Flying Solo Singles Ministry

Flying Solo is a group for singles in their prime years (more or less 40 and above) belonging to the life and ministry of Westminster Presbyterian Church. The group offers single adults the opportunity for Christian fellowship, spiritual and intellectual growth, and service to others. Please let me know if you would like to know more about singles ministry at Westminster. I would love to hear from you! You can reach me at 703-549-4766, ext. 121, or at nhallberens@wpc-alex.org.

Blessings!

Fellowship Opportunities

July 10: Celebrate Alexandria's birthday at Pops on the Waterfront, complete with birthday cake and fireworks!  Oronoco Bay Park, 6:00 -10:00 p.m. (carpool from the church leaving at 5:30 p.m.)

July 12: Our monthly Dine-Out will take us to Kira Italian restaurant in Crystal City located at 2250 -B Crystal Drive.  Join us for an evening of food and friendship.  If you want to carpool, come to the church parking lot by 7:00 p.m.  Otherwise, meet us at the restaurant at about 7:15.

July 27 and August 24: Our monthly Potlucks take place in Johnson Parlor at 7:00 p.m.  Please bring a salad, entree or dessert to share...and a can of food for ALIVE! to drop in the basket on the way into church.  We will also make sandwiches for the Bag Lunch program before we enjoy dinner together.

August 8: Join us for Sunday Brunch at Clyde’s located at 1700 N. Beauregard Street in Alexandria.  It is our tradition to go out to Sunday Brunch in August instead of our monthly Monday Dine-Out (therefore, no Dine-Out on August 9).  RSVPs are helpful but not required.  Please let Nancy Hall Berens know by Friday, August 6 if you plan to attend (nhallberens@wpc-alex.org) but join us even if you decide at the last minute!

September 4: Come to the Highlands – or rather Great Meadow in The Plains – for the Virginia Scottish Games and Festival!  Spend the day watching the caber toss, highland dance, and sheepherding and listening to bagpipes, drums and fiddles!  Look up your family’s clan.  Shop for Scottish and Celtic crafts.  Try some haggis!  Explore the Scottish side of our Presbyterian heritage and have a fun day in the country with friends.  Carpools will leave church at 9:00 a.m. and return in the afternoon.  You can buy tickets at the door or get a discounted ticket in advance by going to www.vascottishgames.org

October 8-10: The Fall Retreat will be Columbus Day weekend this year at Graves Mountain Lodge south of Sperryville, Virginia.  Jeff Hensley will lead a discussion on some of the theological issues represented in the best-selling book The Shack, such as evil, suffering, sin, prayer and the complicatedness of one's relationship to God.  Registration is due by September 20.  Please see our brochure and registration form.

Roundtable Discussions

The Flying Solo Roundtable Discussions are held approximately three times a year on Sunday afternoons immediately after the 11:00 a.m. service. We have a guest or staff facilitator who leads us in discussions. Topics are always interesting and relevant. Light lunch is included. Watch this site for further information on dates and topics.

Retreats

Members of Flying Solo enjoyed a spectacularly beautiful weekend at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware on October 3-5. The theme of our retreat was “What a Friend we have in Jesus: Friendship with Christ.” Our leader Jeff Hensley took our discussion on friendship with each other and with Christ in some new and interesting directions and encouraged lots of lively conversation! During the weekend we enjoyed some relaxed time for extended conversations and fellowship with friends, delicious food, lively games, quiet prayer, group worship, joyful singing, snapping photos, reading, walking, exploring, laughing, crying, hugging…and even some brave souls went swimming with jumping dolphins! If you had to miss it this year, we hope you will join us for next year’s retreat!

Regular Fellowship

Take the opportunity to try some moderately-priced local restaurants while enjoying a good conversation.

We gather each month for a casual potluck dinner and to participate in a mission project. Please bring a salad, entree or dessert to share.
